Located on Fifth Avenue, the Metropolitan’s permanent exhibits will whisk you into the family rooms of colonial America, through the ceremonial rites of Polynesia and past the impassioned brushstrokes of European masterpieces by Vermeer, Picasso, and Van Gogh. In few other places can you view the works of so many cultures in one building. Many pieces showcased in this tour were highlighted in The Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide by the museum director, Philippe de Montebello.

Tips

  • Choose a side bag, not a backpack. Guards and museum workers prohibit backpacks that may snag on artwork or bump other guests. Messenger bags and purses are acceptable.
  • Take a break in one of the cafes. Walking through 5000 years of history can be exhausting! Luckily, the museum offers plenty of benches where you can sit and muse over the artwork. For an inspiring break, choose one of the cafes for snacks, coffee, or a glass of wine. The Petrie Café offers a backdrop of marble sculptures while the American Wing Café is like lunching in a glass pyramid.
  • Visit early and on the weekdays. The museum is a major destination for out-of-towners and locals alike. Arrive when the doors open and enjoy the serenity of marble statues and oil paintings without the school kids.
  • Become a member. The Metropolitan Museum's membership gives you first-hand access to museum news and multiple visits throughout the year. Inquire at the information desk.
  • Enter at the side entrance. During busy hours, the Great Hall can become claustrophobic. Instead of walking up the steps, use the left-side glass doors to enter the museum. Few people enter this way so you can breeze through security, purchase your tickets, and actually take a seat while you check the information desk.

"Exciting, a whole new concept"
Around The World Travel Radio

"Even though I am a local, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting and learning more about the history of the landmarks. The author's interest in the area comes through in his engaging style of writing. Being able to complete the tour at my own pace made it even
more enjoyable."

"When the conference ended, I stayed in town on my own and used T4M's self-guided tour to decide which things in town I wanted to visit and what to see/do there. The guide was right every step of the way. Bottom line, this guide helped me make the most of my time in town."
