Bern is a small and picturesque city by the River Aare, and its medieval Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The buildings have been preserved extremely well and it is a fascinating area. Walking is the best way to get around the cobblestone streets anyway: cars are not even allowed in! The medieval stone arcades are filled with cafes, restaurants and boutiques, and many of Bern’s tourist attractions are here: highlights include the Gothic cathedral Münster and the old clock tower Zytglogge.

Tips

  • Wear good walking shoes! The cobblestone streets are not made for high heels and since this tour is all about strolling around the picturesque old town, make sure your shoes are suitable for a couple of hours of walking. During the spring and fall it can be incredibly sunny, or it can rain, so carry an umbrella.
  • Most shops are closed on Sundays, and most of them also close early on Saturdays, around 4pm. Closing times vary during the week, but Thursday is generally a late shopping night, which here in Bern means that stores may stay open until 8pm. Saturday is a good day to explore the weekly markets.
  • Bern is German-speaking, though French is widely spoken as well. Don't worry if your German is non-existent: all tourist information is available in English. People who work in tourist information services speak excellent English. If some Bernese residents seem reluctant to speak English, it is not because they cannot speak it: they just don't feel that their English is perfect.
  • If you don't want to walk all the way, trams #6, 7, 8 and 9 travel from the railway station to the clock tower Zytglogge. Buy a ticket from one of the red ticket machines at tram stops. The kurtzstrecke ticket allows you to travel a maximum of 5 stops (Zytglogge is 2 stops from the station).
  • You can book a place in advance for a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament. Tours are offered in several languages and they start at 9, 10 and 11am and again at 2, 3, and 4pm on weekdays. Call +41 31 322 85 22 to book. You will also need to bring an official identity document.

"Exciting, a whole new concept"
Around The World Travel Radio

"Even though I am a local, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting and learning more about the history of the landmarks. The author's interest in the area comes through in his engaging style of writing. Being able to complete the tour at my own pace made it even
more enjoyable."
Flora Savitzky (Researcher)

"When the conference ended, I stayed in town on my own and used T4M's self-guided tour to decide which things in town I wanted to visit and what to see/do there. The guide was right every step of the way. Bottom line, this guide helped me make the most of my time in town."
