We’ve included the best tips on where to stay and how to get to the Olympic venues, along with spectacular and recent photos of the ten most popular tourist spots, the ‘must go’ places’ when you are not cheering for your country’s athletes!

Tips

  • Beware of Rio de Janeiro's aggressive drivers (both of cars and motorcycles). They rarely respect pedestrians crossing the street. Wait patiently for the green lights to allow you to get to the other side.
  • Beware of Rio's uneven pavements and streets. Most have been made with hundreds of golf-ball-size stones called 'Portuguese stones' that frequently get loose and leave dangerous holes in the ground.
  • Always have small change available such as the real 5 and 10 bank notes. Avoid wasting time and hassles by paying with the real 50 or 100 bills. (The real is the name of the currency. It means 'royal' in Portuguese.)

"Exciting, a whole new concept"
Around The World Travel Radio

"Even though I am a local, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting and learning more about the history of the landmarks. The author's interest in the area comes through in his engaging style of writing. Being able to complete the tour at my own pace made it even
more enjoyable."
Flora Savitzky (Researcher)

"When the conference ended, I stayed in town on my own and used T4M's self-guided tour to decide which things in town I wanted to visit and what to see/do there. The guide was right every step of the way. Bottom line, this guide helped me make the most of my time in town."
